Flamingos and Eagles - A concert review by Katrin Wagner:

It's midday when Karsten and I start our jouney to Schneeberg in East Germany on a hot Saturday. SAILOR will play there tonight, as well as The Equals, at the annual Oldie Night. We arrive at the open air venue in the afternoon and are told that SAILOR's arrival and soundcheck will be delayed because some of their instruments and luggage got lost at the airport and now they have to stop in Dresden to do some shopping...
We spend the following time waiting for the boys and meet the nice crew (special thanks to Susanne!). To make a long story short: SAILOR finally arrive at 5.40 pm and immediately start unpacking their newly bought (and partly hired) instruments and things. The two new guitars need strings and tuning, and things really aren't easy. In spite of all this, the boys don't lose their humour. Only Grant is - as he says - "not a happy bunny" because all his things got lost.
We remember the golden SAILOR rules once again: 1: Expect the unexpected, 2: There's always something wrong. And they are so very true.
At 6.45 pm the doors are opened, and Karsten and I are joined by SAILOR fans Susi and Hilde who have come all the way from Munich and join us in front of the stage to share the fun. A little later SAILOR finish their soundcheck and can finally drive to their hotel to check in and have a little rest. Meanwhile we wait for the beginning of the concert.
The DJ and host of the show makes the same - wrong - announcement a couple of times, saying that the "Eagles" will be on stage soon. But actually we are supposed to see The Equals. We can't figure out whether it's just the East German accent or a lack of knowledge, but in fact some people in the audience also seem to expect to hear "Hotel California" instead of "Baby Come Back". Strange!
The Equals deliver a great show and we enjoy them very much. During their show it becomes really cold all around us, though. I'm scared of catching a bad flu, while Karsten is scared of dropping his hot soup into his many cameras.
After a short (!) break it's finally time for SAILOR, and in spite of all the technical problems they start off really well with "A Glass Of Champagne". Unfortunately, the strap of the new red guitar falls off in the middle of the song, causing Oliver to keep on playing in a flamingo-position for a little while until he gets a chance to fix the problem. And due to the fact that both guitars are brand new and due to the rapid temperature change they both need to be tuned again and again between the songs. As if the struggle with those two new guitars alone wouldn't be bad enough for Oliver. But the concert is very funny for all of us - fans and band - and the gaps between the songs are bridged with some longer announcements.
For the record: At the last concert a couple of weeks ago I was told that they only play "Wooly Bully" to see my annoyed face in the front row. I then suggested that I could simply turn around during this song to avoid all this. And that's what I do today. So there's no need for little remarks here, eh?! ;-)
More little things go wrong here and there during the show. Cables keep falling off etc. But hey - who cares. It's still a nice show and the sound is really marvellous, thanks to Mark who (as usual! ;-)) does a great job at the mixing desk.
Due to the lack of stage clothes, Grant doesn't return to the stage in his usual "Full Monty" outfit when he's about to start his drum solo - but he's wearing the white stage shirt of Phil (or Oliver? correct me if I'm wrong!) which is MUCH too big for him, making it almost impossible for him to play his drum solo. Well, this and the lack of drum sticks in the moment he needs them most!
The "Full Monty" is then reduced to a 3/4 Monty because Oliver stays behind the stage to prepare for "Con Te Partirò". It's the first time we get this special encore with only Phil, Henry and Grant. And because this is all so very unusual and because Grant still looks slightly lost in this big white shirt, Karsten, Susi, Hilde and I laugh so hard during this entire part of the show that we can hardly breathe or stand upright afterwards. This also seems to affect the boys.
After the show we meet the SAILORs again behind the stage. And although their hotel is booked up, Mark, driver Winnie and Susanne from the venue help us to get a room there because The Equals have a TV performance tomorrow morning and can't stay. So we can get one of their rooms and don't have to drive back tonight. Marvellous!
At the hotel, Karsten, Susi and I join the boys for a drink and a chat before we all go to bed. The next morning is business as usual: Breakfast, a bit of waiting to say goodbye and then we're off. SAILOR will only leave the hotel at midday, but we decide to leave earlier to avoid the heat and to avoid waiting for 2 more hours to stand outside and wave, as we normally do.

Heiße Sommer-Oldienacht am Filzteich
Stadtwerke Schneeberg und Silberstrom präsentieren Oldieparty am 30. August

Nachdem am Filzteich diesem Jahr ja schon einige Höhepunkte das Wasser zum Schäumen brachten, wird am 30. August die Begeisterung wohl überkochen.
Die Silberstrom Oldieparty steigt und Stadtwerke Schneeberg GmbH & Silberstrom präsentieren wieder zwei hochkarätige Bands. "The Equals" werden 20.30 Uhr die Bühne betreten. Nachdem die "Equals" schon seit Beginn der Oldiewelle Ende der 80-er Jahre zu den erfolgreichsten Original-Oldie-Top- Bands gehörten, sorgte das internationale Nr. 1-Comeback ihres Superhits "Baby Come Back" für einen ungeahnten Run auf die Band seit 1995! Europaweit sind Derv Gordon, Patrick Lloyd, Ronnie Telemaque und David Martin wieder auf allen TV-Kanälen - und am 30. August auf der Bühne in am Filzteich.
Gegen 22.15 Uhr übernimmt "SAILOR" das musikalische Zepter. Die Band ist seit den 70-er Jahren aktiv. 1974 hatten sie ihre ersten Auftritte. Das erste Album "Sailor" und die Single "Traffic Jam" erreichten sofort Gold-Status in Holland. Die größten Hits aus den 70ern sind: "Girls Girls Girls", "A Glass Of Champagne" und "Stiletto Heels", sowie ihre beiden 90er Comeback-Hits "The Secretary" und "La Cumbia". Die Musik ist hauptsächlich vom Klang des Nickelodeon, eines Instruments, das die Mitglieder der Band selbst entwickelt haben. Dieses Instrument ist das Markenzeichen, der Band.
Einlass ist bereits ab 19 Uhr. Bis 20 Uhr sorgt DJ Jo-Jo für das warm-up. Er wird auch in der kurzen Umbaupause und nach den Konzerten bis etwa 24 Uhr für prima Stimmung am Filzteich sorgen.

Mehr als 800 Fans von Oldieparty am Filzteich begeistert

Schneeberg. Bei der Silberstrom-Oldieparty hat es am Samstag mehr als 800 Fans zur Bühne am Strandbad Filzteich gezogen. Schon vor 19 Uhr gab es eine lange Schlange am Einlass. Unter den Wartenden waren Heike und Matthias Ladewig: "Wir lieben Oldies, wollen einfach mal schauen", erklärten die Schneeberger. Es sollte sich lohnen. Eine heiße, wohl für alle unvergessene Nacht hatte begonnen. Die britische Band The Equals, die 1968 mit "Baby Come Back" ihren größten Hit landete, sorgte ebenso für Stimmung wie die Kultband SAILOR. Die wurde mit "Girls Girls Girls" und einer Musik bekannt, die hauptsächlich geprägt vom Klang des selbst entwickelten Nickelodeon ist.
Doch bevor es losging, wurde erst einmal das Publikum angefeuert. Das klappte ganz gut, die Leute gingen mit, riefen "yeah, yeah, yeah" und freuten sich auf die Bands, obwohl die noch eine halbe Stunde auf sich warten ließen. Inmitten der Masse fühlten sich auch Cindy und Pia Gellert wohl. Die Schwestern waren erstmals bei einem Live-Konzert dabei. "Die Musik ist wirklich großartig. Ich weiß jetzt: Es muss nicht immer Techno sein. Auch bin ich überrascht, wie die sonst oft so ernst wirkende Generation aus sich herausgehen kann", erklärte die 29-jährige Cindy. Ihre acht Jahre jüngere Schwester freute sich, schon einige gute Schnappschüsse von den Bands eingefangen zu haben. Klar, dass die Schneebergerinnen wiederkommen wollen.
Schon zum vierten Mal war Hans Jürgen Herrmann mit von der Partie. "Es ist einfach einsame Spitze. Bei dieser Musik wird man wieder jung", sagte der 62-Jährige, der mit einer ganzen Fangemeinde angereist war. "Das ist noch wirkliche, starke Musik. So was gibt es heute nicht mehr. Diese Männer können spielen, geben alles auf der Bühne und reißen das Publikum mit", sagte Ron Seidlitz. Der Wilkau-Haßlauer ist oft zu Konzerten unterwegs. "Ich war erst bei Rock am Fluss in Dresden, das war nichts für mich. Dagegen ist, was hier geboten wird, einsame Spitzenklasse", lobte der 46-Jährige. Zu den Fans, die direkt an der Bühne abrockten, gehörte Claudia Kallweit aus Schneeberg. "Von meinem Vater wurde ich schon als Kind dazu verdonnert, Oldies anzuhören - und nun gefallen sie mir. Vor allem die Beatles sind meine Welt", verriet die 20-Jährige. "Ich stehe vor allem auf Ostrock: Ute Freudenberg, Karat ... SAILOR habe ich das erste Mal in Schwarzenberg live erlebt. Das ist melodisch gute, gehaltvolle Musik. Es ist toll, dass die Schneeberger Stadtwerke jedes Jahr solche Höhepunkte schaffen", sagte Vater Jürgen Kallweit. Der 52-Jährige wünscht sich auch Gruppen wie Karussell auf der Filzteich-Bühne.
"Das ist ein tolles Erlebnis, direkt dabei sein zu können, und es ist gut, dass die Kinder freien Eintritt hatten", sagten Kerstin und Ralf Bindseil. Die Steinacher waren ganz in Familie angereist. Auch Marlene (9) und Marvin (10) zeigten sich von den alten Rockmusikern begeistert. Am Ende gab es Begeisterungspfiffe und Zugaben. "It's Time To Say Goodbye" ging unter die Haut. Oldies sind also nicht nur etwas für ältere Semester. Das bewies die Veranstaltung ganz ohne Zweifel. Im kommenden Jahr wird es natürlich wieder eine Oldienacht geben.
