Champagne on "Sailor" - Katrin Wagner celebrates band with radio programme

*** Kassel. Katrin Wagner is a fan girl through and through. The presenter of the radio programme "Handmade" on Free Radio Kassel has lost her heart to a band that was founded in England no less than 50 years ago and to which the 44-year-old has remained loyal since the age of 11.
Although the old line-up of the "Sailor" combo no longer exists, their hits live on - and not just in the life and radio programmes of Katrin Wagner, who works in her day job as a team assistant at an environmental and occupational safety consultancy in Kassel.
In the 1970s, "Sailor" topped the international charts with songs such as "Girls Girls Girls" and "A Glass Of Champagne". Both songs have since become evergreens and pop music would be unthinkable without them. For a while, "A Glass Of Champagne" was number 1 in England ahead of Abba's "Knowing Me Knowing You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen.
"The four gentlemen of Sailor are now between 76 and 80 years old and have not played together in their original line-up since the end of 1995," says Katrin Wagner. After various line-up changes, there have been no more Sailor performances since May 2014.
"Singer and captain Georg Kajanus left the band at the beginning of 1996, when I had just turned 16. It's all the more extraordinary that the musicians still keep in touch with me as a fan - all these years later," she says. And what's more: "I meet up with Georg Kajanus and his partner once a year in London for a nice dinner and a few glasses of wine. Or even champagne," says Katrin Wagner cheerfully.
She also enjoys meeting the other band members and some of their successors. She has become a chronicler of Sailor with a wealth of knowledge, and it goes without saying that she has prepared a special programme on "50 years of Sailor" on Freies Radio Kassel.
She owes her passion for "Sailor" to her brother Karsten Wagner, who is 15 years older and has since passed away. He took her to a legendary first Sailor comeback concert with the original line-up when she was just 14 years old. And thus kindled a fire in her. 117 concerts were to follow. "I remember every single one of them very clearly".
The band had welcomed her and her brother backstage early on: after they had reacted to Katrin's glitter-decorated cardboard sign "Here we are to meet Sailor" held up in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle from the stage. That was on 30 December 1993, a day she will never forget.
"Karsten was embarrassed by his little sister's sign," Katrin remembers, but it ultimately established a friendship between stars and fans that has lasted for decades - right up to the present day.
This also included a curiosity: Sailor had a self-developed and self-built multifunctional musical instrument, a mixture of synthesiser and keyboard instrument, the so-called "Nickelodeon", on stage as a trademark. When the band discarded it many years later, the original invention ended up with the Wagner family in Fuldatal.
The Wagners wanted to prevent the Nickelodeon from being disposed of. Fans from England had transported it to Germany. Today, parts of it stand in Katrin Wagner's kitchen and ensure that she regularly gets her fan-heart beating.
When Karsten Wagner died unexpectedly in 2016, Katrin decided not only to continue his programme "Handmade" in memory of her brother, but also to keep the Sailor fan flag flying high. She still maintains the website
www.sailor-music.com. And so it is a point of honour for the radio producer to present a programme on the band's anniversary and show her current interviews on YouTube.
What you can't see on the radio: Katrin wears a blue sailor-style shirt, decorated all over with little anchors, for the likeable interviews she conducted online.

Service: Special broadcast "50 years of Sailor" with interviews with the original band members on Free Radio Kassel on 9 November from 8 pm, repeat 10 November from 12 noon. The interviews will also be published on YouTube; the teaser is available at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sf8KuiXFdOs. ***

Re-release of UME album,
co-written and produced by Georg Kajanus and featuring Henry Marsh on keyboards

Here are some good news from Georg Kajanus. He writes:

"Back in 1988, I co-wrote and produced a pop electronica album called UME with the internationally renowned Japanese composer, Shigeru Umebayashi, famous for his scores for such films as The Christ of Nanjing, In the Mood for Love and The House of Flying Daggers.I had a wonderful time working with Ume in London and I am very pleased to announce that the album we worked on together 36 years ago has been re-released on download and streaming services today. (Ume is doing the lead vocals and guitar on all the tracks and Sailor member Henry Marsh is on keyboards.)
Here’s the link to the album on YouTube. You can buy it on iTunes, Amazon, etc., however, there is no mention of my participation on the album on those entities, as of yet, just on YouTube:
