"Damals" Tour Diary 2014
by Phil Pickett

Video message from Henry and Phil, recorded after day 1 of the tour:

I write from our current traveling home, a VW combi bus on our way to Magdeburg, which will be the exact halfway point on SAILOR’s 40th Anniversary Tour of Germany, along with Chris Andrews and Eric Faulkner’s Bay City Rollers. I cannot remember a time when we will have completed this many shows within such a short period, and quite possibly one would have to go back as far as some of our early UK tours in 1974 / 75 to find such a concentrated schedule (although some of our fans may prove me wrong on this observation!)

Although Grant, Henry, Georg and I actually formed SAILOR in 1973, we didn’t start full touring until 1974, so Henry and I were reasonably confident about naming this the "40th Anniversary Tour" with a degree of authenticity.

When first approached about doing these dates last year whilst Tom was away in the USA and all over the world playing drums for Lana Del Rey, to be honest neither Henry or I were very sure we would be able to commit to such a long time away from home and our other activities. Speaking for myself, I was anyway quite concerned about taking on a tour like this due to, (er, how can one best put this?) certain aspects of the ageing process! In particular, having to belt out our trademark vocals night after night, plus the anticipation of the legendary harshness of a German winter and whether the ‘old bones’ could take the punishment of such a gruelling schedule.

Well I’m happy to report "so far so good" - and only half way, so hope I’m not speaking too soon, but am feeling absolutely great; catching up on lots of sleep, avidly watching boxed sets including the amazing "Breaking Bad" and reading amongst others, a very fine book Henry lent to me by Levon Helm about his adventures with The Band, one of my favourite groups of all time. (Shortly before we formed SAILOR, Georg and I were right up there in the front row of their legendary appearance at the Albert Hall, London in 1971.)

I must also note that the weather so far has also been surprisingly kind to us. Let's hope it lasts!

But overall I have to tell you that traveling and playing with the Marsh family, Henry and his two sons - Oliver and (my godson) Tom - has to be one of the most enjoyable experiences I can remember in a very long time and is a pure joy to be part of. It’s especially rewarding as SAILOR has even more than ever now become a real ‘family’ (ad)venture - and having Tom and Ollie adding "might and muscle" to our sound, this latest incarnation of the band is possibly one of the best line-ups we’ve ever had. Anyway we are having enormous fun every night on the tour, and actually heard myself describing the supremely talented musical Marsh family the other evening as being like "The Osmonds on steroids!"

Many have been exceptionally generous in their praise for the show after having seen the Wagners' YouTube clip, including a certain Mr Kajanus who was particularly moved by Ollie’s magnificent rendition of ‘Con Te Partirò’ - SAILOR’s latest single/ anniversary EP release, but then who wouldn’t be? It’s a show-stopper! The crowds are giving standing ovations every night and if you haven’t managed to see us yet on this tour, please try not to miss it. After each concert, we immediately dash off stage to ‘meet and greet’ the fans to sell many signed copies of our new ‘Con Te Partirò’ EP (also containing 4 other tracks sung by Ollie; Champagne, Girls, La Cumbia and Secretary).

Anyway, great to talk to you, but now have to get back to the familiar routine of hotel, soundcheck, catering (usually pretty good but with one or two dismal exceptions!) a short snooze - and then..... Roll on 10pm when we are on stage again!

Phil Pickett

(to be continued...?!)

Photos and videos of the tour can be found at the Concert Photos-section.

Here are some extracts from newspaper reports about the concerts:

  • (...) And so the audience got the familiar picture with the two keyboard players facing each other during the first song "A Glass Of Champagne", receiving a lot of applause. The didn't just offer outstanding music like "One Drink Too Many" and "Girls Girls Girls" but carried the audience away to waves of thundering applause with their musical performances. Finally, the last song of the evening was phenomenal when the lead guitarist of the band SAILOR sang Andrea Bocelli's world-hit "Con Te Partiró", with which the band said goodbye.

  • (...) In all those years SAILOR have stayed true to their basic concept. At one point during their show they perform in sailor-uniforms. And they also stay original choice of instruments. A Nickelodeon, an organ, drums and guitar remain the musical basis of SAILOR. And of course the expressive singing, crowned by Oliver Marsh at the end of the concert with the song "Time To Say Goodbye". One can tell that he is a trained opera singer. They bring down the house, and at the end, after various encores, they receive standing ovations.
